In JCEM, Grani and colleagues assess five internationally endorsed sonographic risk-stratification systems to see which are best at reducing unnecessary thyroid biopsies. Buffet et al. confirm that a positive genetic test can benefit patients with pheochromocytoma or paraganglioma. Gharzai and coauthors provide evidence that adjuvant radiation improves overall and recurrence-free survival after gross resection of adrenocortical carcinoma. Yan and coauthors document disturbing evidence of the increasing incidence and incidence-based mortality of thyroid cancer in California in the 21st Century.

In Endocrinology, Truong et al. describe unique isoform-specific functions of the phosphorylated progesterone receptor in breast cancer cells, suggesting approaches to possible new biomarkers and ways to target cancer stem cells pharmacologically. Bulun and coauthors discuss accumulating evidence about how epithelial mutations in endometriosis could give rise to epithelial ovarian cancer. Reese and coauthors review recent information about the role of grainyhead-like protein 2 in cancer and in maintaining the epithelial state, with special attention to hormone-dependent cancers. Sabharwal and Sharifi analyze the effects of the HSD3B1 genotype in producing androgens that affect the outcome in metastatic prostate cancer.

In Journal of the Endocrine Society, Clarke and colleagues provide a comprehensive genomic characterization of parathyroid cancer that identifies novel candidate driver genes and core pathways. Silva de Morais and coauthors provide evidence that Hashimo thyroiditis increases the risk of thyroid cancer in patients presenting for thyroid nodule evaluation. Falhammar and colleagues compare treatment and outcomes in adrenal medullary hyperplasia and pheochromocytoma, remarking that the first “seemed to be a precursor” of the second. Head and colleagues describe encouraging results in a small number of patients given immunotherapy and mitotane for metastatic adrenocortical carcinoma.

In Endocrine Reviews, Cabanillas and colleagues discuss new treatments for advanced thyroid cancer, including agents that target specific mutations as well as antiangiogenic multikinase inhibitors. Hofland et al. describe advances in the diagnosis and management of well-differentiated neuroendocrine neoplasms, while Srirangam Nadhamuni and Korbonits review genetic and epigenetic mechanisms contributing to pituitary tumorigenesis.
