In Journal of the Endocrine Society, Kildemoes and coauthors characterize the dose-IGF-1 response to somapacitan in children with growth hormone deficiency. Liimatta et al. describe how increased early growth and weight gain predict higher serum androgen concentrations and earlier onset of puberty in girls, but not in children with small birth size who do not have catch-up growth. Roy and associates report that in a cross-sectional survey of transgender youth, total body bone mineral density Z-scores were slightly below average, but lowest in the group that was assigned male at birth and prescribed gonadotropin-releasing hormone agonist monotherapy.
In JCEM Case Reports, Tsumori and associates report on a case of hypothalamic hamartoma that led to severe obesity and hyperphagia in an infant. Kahlon and colleagues describe the case of child with Kabuki syndrome and hyperinsulinism who developed a hyperglycemic hyperosmolar state following treatment with diazoxide. Anka et al. describe the value of 18F-DOPA positron emission tomography/magnetic resonance imaging in diagnosing focal hyperinsulinism in an adolescent.
In Endocrine Reviews, Rohayem and coauthors review mini-puberty, both physiological and disordered, and discuss options for therapeutic replacement. Carré and colleagues survey the evidence for and possible mechanisms of coxsackievirus B involvement in the development of type 1 diabetes. Krysiak et al. survey cardiometabolic aspects of congenital adrenal hyperplasia.
In Endocrinology, de Faria Oliveira and colleagues report that the puberty blocker leuprolide reduces sex differences in play and anxiety-like behavior in juvenile rats. Menezes and coauthors provide an account of the pattern of growth hormone action in the mouse brain. Yang and coauthors identify environmental compounds that might trigger early female puberty by activating the receptors for gonadotropin-releasing hormone and kisspeptin.
JCEM carries a report from Redling and associates suggesting that micro-RNAs could serve as markers of beta cell dysfunction and inform understanding of youth-onset type 2 diabetes. Duckett et al. report that functionally damaging variants of the melanocortin receptor are overrepresented in patients with constitutional delay of growth and puberty. And Simmons and Sims review progress and prospects in the screening for and prevention of type 1 diabetes.
