Join host Chase Hendrickson, MD, from Vanderbilt University Medical Center, in a discussion about a study in The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism that reports the relationship between body mass index and percent body fat in terms of defining overweight and obesity. He talks with Andrew Kraftson, MD, from the University of Michigan and guest expert Beverly Tchang, MD, from Weill Cornell Medicine in New York City. The article featured this month, by Potter et al, was first published in JCEM in May 2024: “Defining Overweight and Obesity by Percent Body Fat Instead of Body Mass Index.”

Meet the Speakers

Beverly Tchang and Andrew Kraftson

Beverly Tchang, MD, is an assistant professor of clinical medicine at Weill Cornell in New York. Dr. Tchang graduated from SUNY Downstate Medical College and completed her residency and fellowships at New York Presbyterian/Weill Cornell and Columbia University. She is triple board-certified in internal medicine, endocrinology, and obesity medicine. She is the co-program director of Cornell’s obesity medicine fellowship and president of the nonprofit organization Tri-State Obesity Society. She founded the consulting agency Weightless Consulting, with the mission of educating stakeholders in today’s health economy. Connect with her on X @BevTchangMD and LinkedIn.

Andrew T. Kraftson, MD, is a clinical associate professor in the Division of Metabolism, Endocrinology and Diabetes at the University of Michigan. He received his medical degree from the Chicago Medical School (North Chicago, IL) and completed both his internal medicine residency and chief residency at the McGaw Medical Center of Northwestern University (Evanston, IL), then underwent fellowship training in endocrinology at the University of Michigan. He joined the faculty at Michigan in 2010. Dr. Kraftson’s clinical and research interests focus on treating patients with obesity. He is the director of the Weight Navigation Program and the Post-Bariatric Endocrinology Clinic and a participating physician in the Investigational Weight Management Program. His research focuses on understanding current treatment practices for patients with excess weight and obesity and seeking to improve and personalize that care. In addition to these roles, Dr. Kraftson is the associate program director for the endocrinology fellowship program.

Chase HendricksonChase Hendrickson, MD, MPH, practices general endocrinology at the Vanderbilt University Medical Center, where he is an associate program director for the endocrinology fellowship program. His interests include endocrine education, teaching inferential methods, and quality improvement.
